Why is it a big deal?
Communion is a great gift from God to his people. It is intended to nourish, maintain, refresh, strengthen and exhilarate the spiritual life of believers when it is received in faith! (John 6, Belgic Confession Art 35; Heidelberg Catechism Question and Answer 75; Calvin’s Institutes IV.17).
Do you want to receive and experience the saving grace of Jesus’ death on the cross? Do you want to have your confidence in him renewed and strengthened that you may lead a new life in his Holy Spirit? Come and receive!
As Elders, we have the great privilege of looking our congregation in the eye and saying “this is the body of Christ given for you.” That is a beautiful grace filled moment. At our Elder’s meeting this past week, we concluded that communion is too important to celebrate only 6 times a year as has been our practice. Our plan is to begin celebrating monthly on the 2nd Sunday of each month.
We also discussed how to improve the logistics of how we take communion. We have 5 aisles in our sanctuary. We ask that people come forward to receive communion on the far outside aisles (along the windows) as well as the center aisle. The other two aisles will be used to return to your seat. We’ll eat and drink after all have been served.
As always, if you or your children aren’t at a place of faith yet to receive communion, we invite you to come forward to receive a blessing from the Elders. To let us know you would like to receive communion, extend a hand. To let us know you like to receive a blessing, please place your hand over your chest.
We want to continue to talk about how to make the most of God great gift of communion. We welcome your questions, comments and thoughts.
